If you have put a UK SIM in your iPhone and want to use its number for iMessage, you may find the number still spinning under Send & Receive, or your messages still arriving from your email address. Start by identifying which symptom you have. Receiving ordinary SMS does not necessarily mean the iMessage number setup is complete.
The current giffgaff student discount offers 100GB for £10 a month on a Monthly Rolling plan, with the student benefit lasting 12 months. Eligibility still matters. A physical SIM can start the account setup, but it does not replace the UK residency, age, student-email and auto-renew conditions in the promotion terms.
Buying from outside the UK is easier when the product is identified before payment. A physical SIM provides the card and number, while a giffgaff top-up voucher provides a 16-digit payment code. Decide whether the code should add airtime credit or buy a plan, then check the seller, denomination and delivery record.
People who use Codex, X, GitHub, Claude and Google Cloud together eventually run into phone verification while registering an account, changing devices or recovering access. Codex itself can use ChatGPT sign-in or an API key and does not specifically require a UK number. The value of a UK mobile number is broader: it gives the owner a number that can remain available for overseas accounts, ordinary texts and future recovery attempts. An activated giffgaff SIM supplies a real UK mobile number that works for calls, texts and data in the UK and can roam on partner networks in China.
Before deciding how to cancel giffgaff, check whether the account uses a rolling plan, an 18-month mobile contract, or is still within the first 14 days. Then choose whether to stop the next charge, give up the number, or port it; the wrong route can cause another payment, an early termination charge, or loss of the number.
If you can't log in to giffgaff, stop guessing passwords or requesting repeated codes. First separate an account-identifier problem from a password, 2FA delivery, browser or app failure. A giffgaff email login only identifies the account when that email is not shared across multiple member accounts.
After a lost giffgaff SIM, block the old card before arranging replacement. Keep the existing number through an official replacement SIM or a swap to an unactivated giffgaff SIM, and never activate the substitute on a new account.
Start with what you actually need. If you want a UK number that you can manage over the long term, giffgaff should be near the top of your list. It provides full calling and texting, and you can transfer the number to another UK network using a PAC. Under KiteSim's current terms, its virtual numbers are for receiving text messages only, while the eSIM in its app is primarily a mobile data product.
The often-quoted claim that an O2 Germany number costs only CNY 0.15 a year to keep active refers to two bank transfers of €0.01 each. It leaves out the €4.99 starter SIM, bank transfer fees, identity verification, and the time needed to resolve a failed payment. O2’s official price list does not guarantee €0.01 as its minimum top-up amount.
Start with the country code you need. If you want a UK number, giffgaff should come before CallYa on your shortlist. It does not put users through Germany's passport video-identification process, and its inactivity window is six months. CallYa's €0 base plan is valuable only if you genuinely need a German number, can complete KYC in your own name and are willing to check the account every two or three months.
The claim that Vodafone Netherlands costs about CNY 9 a year comes with important conditions. If you have already obtained the SIM, completed its first activation and added credit, sending one ordinary text from China before each six-month deadline gives a nominal annual cost of approximately CNY 9.35. The price of obtaining the SIM, collecting it, the minimum initial €5 top-up and any mistakes are not included in that figure.
Both services provide UK numbers, so start with where you will use the SIM. If you live in China and mainly need to receive occasional texts while keeping a spare UK number, giffgaff should be the first choice. It retains a credit-only PAYG option and publishes clearer rules and prices for receiving standard texts in China. VOXI is a better fit for people who live in the UK and use a lot of mobile data.
