Both use O2, so compare contracts, Clubcard, family benefits, PAYG, roaming and support rather than choosing from the host network alone.

Sharing O2 is only the starting point

Both providers use O2. Moving between them is unlikely to fix a location where the underlying O2 signal is absent, although plan limits, 5G access, support, billing and extras can differ.

We used Expert Reviews, Mobile Coverage and consumer comparisons to identify support, Clubcard, family-account, contract, PAYG and roaming questions, then verified them on official Tesco Mobile and giffgaff pages. Awards, satisfaction scores and individual coverage experiences remain context rather than product terms.

Price the contract and Clubcard together

Tesco SIM-only offers can require Clubcard and use different minimum terms. Calculate the full period, standard price, Clubcard Price, exit conditions and benefits you will actually use. Family Perks apply to eligible pay-monthly multi-line accounts rather than PAYG.

giffgaff's plans and credit mode suit uncertain end dates and unused months. Tesco becomes more compelling for a longer UK stay when Clubcard savings and a consolidated family bill are useful.

Tesco PAYG is a separate product

Tesco Essentials uses 30-day bundles that renew from available credit unless auto-renewal is changed. A standard call, text or data session activates the SIM. Do not transfer contract prices, Family Perks or promises to PAYG.

Check current activity, balance and closure rules for any spare line. giffgaff also requires qualifying activity within six months; incoming texts alone do not count.

Use the current roaming policy

Tesco currently lists 48 Home From Home destinations where UK allowances can be used without an EU roaming charge. Old pages that only said the benefit would run until 2026 no longer settle the question. Product, destination and fair-use conditions still need checking before travel.

giffgaff generally provides up to 5GB in its EU Zone and applies UK residence and use conditions. China requires a separate destination-rate check on both services.
