giffgaff currently includes plan calls and texts in 37 EU Zone destinations, with up to 5GB of roaming data. After the roaming allowance is used, the options include an eligible early plan renewal, a travel data add-on or pay-as-you-go use from airtime credit.
Switzerland, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey sit outside the regular EU roaming allowance. Calls, texts and data used there are charged separately from account credit. A European itinerary should therefore be checked one destination at a time on the giffgaff roaming page.

Calls or texts from these locations to a country outside the UK, EU and giffgaff selected destinations currently cost £1 per minute and 30p per text. Switzerland uses Rest of the World rates, while the three Crown Dependencies use UK non-EU rates. The official page currently lists the same figures above for both groups.
Data can increase the bill quickly. At 20p per MB, 100MB costs £20. Maps, photo syncing, operating-system updates and messaging apps can all create background traffic.
Choosing mobile data for Switzerland
Switzerland supports a separate travel data add-on. The current official prices are £8 for 1GB, £16 for 5GB and £24 for 10GB. Add-ons are bought in the giffgaff app, last 30 days from purchase and cover data only.

A non-EU Zone add-on works only in the specific country selected at purchase. A Switzerland add-on should not be assumed to cover another non-EU destination. Turning off mobile data and data roaming is usually the lower-cost choice when the SIM is kept mainly for incoming texts.

Disable data that is not needed
Turn off data roaming and mobile data on the giffgaff line. On a dual-SIM phone, also disable automatic mobile-data switching. - 3
Watch the Swiss border
A phone can connect to a Swiss network while still in a neighbouring EU country. On trains, road trips and in border towns, manually select a network that remains in the EU Zone when appropriate. - 4
Limit credit spending
Enable the credit spend cap and check the account balance and plan status. Compare PAYG data with an add-on before using more data.
