Start with the decision and evidence boundary

For a lightly used spare number, the main question is the cost of months with little or no use. Customers joining 1pMobile PAYG from 1 August 2026 must spend at least £10 every 90 days. giffgaff can run from credit without a monthly plan, but still requires qualifying activity at least once every six months.

We used SIM Only Finder, SIM Sherpa and recent user discussions to identify gaps around network access, plans, EU limits, Wi-Fi Calling, support and disconnection, then verified the material rules on official terms and help pages. Third-party speed, service and verification-code experiences are not treated as universal results.

Calculate the minimum spend by join date

1pMobile uses three commitment periods. New customers from 1 August 2026 are on £10 per 90 days; those joining from 15 October 2025 to 31 July 2026 are on £10 per 120 days; earlier customers are on £10 per 60 days. Four 90-day periods cover 360 days and total £40. A single £10 top-up does not keep a new account running for a year.

A Boost is billed every 30 days. When all Boosts end, the account returns to the current new-customer PAYG commitment period from the following day. Check the next date and balance before stopping auto-renewal.

Test the device and network features

Check home, work and commuting locations rather than choosing from a brand name. 1pMobile's terms do not guarantee compatibility with every handset and an unlock may be required. Wi-Fi Calling, VoLTE and 5G also depend on the plan, model, software and coverage. Test them after activation, and keep a separate account-recovery method because no network guarantees third-party verification messages.

Budget EU travel and China standby separately

1pMobile caps Boost data at 14GB in the EU/EEA. Its fair-use rules can add a daily charge when roaming dominates UK use over a 90-day period, and a visited network may restrict a line after more than 60 consecutive days. giffgaff also applies an EU allowance and residence-based fair use.

UK and EU rates do not determine China costs. Check the destination pages, disable unneeded data roaming and test texts, calls and actual deductions with a small balance.
