How to choose between giffgaff and SMARTY student plans (2026)
A student searching for a giffgaff student sim will often see giffgaff student and SMARTY student SIM on the same page of results. They are not the same kind of offer. giffgaff currently runs a separate student promotion: £10 a month for 100GB. SMARTY's student page mainly recommends its ordinary rolling plans. The public prices on SMARTY's homepage on 12 September 2026 are not a second 100GB student-only deal.

I checked SMARTY's homepage and student page, and giffgaff's student-offer help article, on 12 September 2026. giffgaff's promotion terms still live on its student and promotions pages, so re-open those before you pay. This page is for people comparing a giffgaff student sim with SMARTY's live public tiers.
Separate a student promotion from a plan students can buy
| Item | giffgaff student promotion | SMARTY student page / public plans |
|---|---|---|
| Separate student price? | Yes. The current public student tier is £10 for 100GB | The student page sells flexibility, 5G and EU roaming. Public prices are the ordinary data tiers |
| Eligibility | A working .ac.uk email, or a designated student SIM. Terms also require age 18+ and UK residence | SIM-only accounts are for people aged 16+. There is no separate .ac.uk check on the student page |
| Term | Monthly rolling, with the student benefit for up to 12 months if auto-renew stays on | One-month rolling, cancellable. SMARTY says it does not force in-contract price rises |
| Network | O2 | Three / VodafoneThree |
| EU roaming | The student page shows up to 5GB | Official text allows up to 12GB from the allowance, plus calls and texts to UK and EU numbers |
| eSIM | Yes, through the official app | Yes |
On 12 September 2026 SMARTY's homepage listed: unlimited £20, 200GB £17, 150GB £15, 100GB £12, 40GB £10, 20GB £9, 16GB £8 and 5GB £6. The same homepage was also promoting 32GB for £8 as a double-data offer. Those figures change. Use the live plan page at checkout.
Do not treat third-party posts that claim "50GB or 80GB for £8" as a fact. That is not what SMARTY's homepage showed that day. Searches for giffgaff student plans should land on this student-promotion comparison, not the ordinary £10 three-way table.
Choose giffgaff when you can prove student status and need predictable general data
The 100GB on the giffgaff student promotion is all general data. Hotspot, maps, video calls and browsing come from the same allowance, which is easier to budget.
Existing members can join. The student-offer help page says: register with a .ac.uk email if you have one; if you already have an account, change the email there. After you save it, check whether the £10 / 100GB student plan actually appears. The detailed workflow is in the giffgaff student application guide.
The bar is higher. Without a working .ac.uk inbox or a designated student SIM, do not plan around 100GB. The 12-month benefit starts when the plan first goes live. Turn auto-renew off and later months may lose the offer. Indoor O2 signal in your room, lecture theatres and commute matters more than the extra data on paper.
Choose SMARTY when the university email is not ready and you want a one-month trial
SMARTY's student page repeats the same points: one-month rolling, pause or cancel, no credit check, 5G, hotspot allowed. That is the more direct path if you have just arrived, do not have a hall address yet, or the .ac.uk inbox is still closed.
The EU allowance is also wider. Official text allows up to 12GB from the plan, plus calls and texts to UK numbers while in the EU. For weekend trips, that can matter more than 20GB extra in the UK.
It is not a student-only 100GB plan. If you compare against giffgaff's 100GB, use SMARTY's live £10 or £12 tiers, not the marketing sentences. On 12 September 2026 the £10 tier was 40GB and the £12 tier was 100GB. The £8 tier was 16GB as standard, or 32GB during the double-data promotion.
SMARTY also says the service is 4G / 5G and is not compatible with 2G handsets. Check old phones first. Official roaming text says the service may be suspended after 60 days of continuous use outside the UK in a rolling 12-month period.
Decide in four steps, not 100 versus 40
- 1
Check eligibility
Do you have a .ac.uk email or a designated student SIM? If not, do not budget for giffgaff's student 100GB. - 2
Map coverage
Check O2 and Three coverage for halls, campus and the commute. Test indoors if you can. - 3
Read actual usage
Use three months of real data. Heavy hotspot or use near 80GB favours the giffgaff student tier. Light or unsettled use favours a SMARTY monthly plan. - 4
Open the live plan pages
Record price, allowance, renewal date and the cancel path before you pay.
If O2 already works, the email qualifies and you will keep auto-renew on, start with the giffgaff student promotion. If the university inbox is late, you want to test Three, or the 12GB EU cap matters more, start with SMARTY's live public tiers. LarkSIM already has an August £10 three-way comparison for ordinary rolling plans, not this 100GB student promotion.
A physical card is only useful before arrival. A verified giffgaff physical SIM does not grant student eligibility. The VOXI student offer stays on its own giffgaff versus VOXI student comparison.
