giffgaff Messages Not Sending? Enable RCS on iPhone and Android (2026)
For giffgaff messages not sending, first check whether the conversation is using RCS or ordinary SMS. giffgaff supports RCS for richer messaging through the normal messaging app. Enable it on iPhone or Android, then test with a trusted contact on the other platform to confirm that the conversation uses RCS and sends from the correct giffgaff number.

Separate RCS, iMessage and SMS
RCS adds read receipts, media, links and group messaging to supported conversations. iMessage remains Apple's own service, while ordinary SMS carries standard texts, many service alerts and many verification codes. They can appear in one app but do not prove the same service is working.
| Message type | Typical use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RCS | Cross-platform or supported RCS conversations | Both devices and networks support RCS and the status is connected |
| iMessage | Apple-to-Apple conversations | The sending number or email is activated with Apple |
| SMS | Ordinary texts, service alerts and many codes | The giffgaff line can send and receive standard texts |
Enabling RCS does not convert every bank or website code into RCS. Use the giffgaff verification-text guide when a login code is the real problem.
Enable giffgaff RCS on iPhone
giffgaff currently requires iOS 18.2 or later. Check the installed iOS version before changing messaging settings.
- 1
Open Messages settings
Open Settings, choose Apps and then Messages. - 2
Turn on RCS Messaging
Find the RCS Messaging switch and enable it. - 3
Check the line
On a dual-SIM iPhone, confirm that the giffgaff line is enabled and shows the correct number. - 4
Open a cross-platform conversation
Choose a trusted Android contact and look for the RCS label in the composer or conversation details.
Do not rely on bubble colour alone. Device themes and message fallback can change the appearance, so use the RCS label, the sending number and a completed test message.
Enable giffgaff RCS on Android
giffgaff's current instructions use Google Messages and require Android 5.0 or later. Update Google Messages from Google Play before setup.
- 1
Use Google Messages
Open it and make it the current SMS app. - 2
Accept the first prompt
Turn on chat features when Google Messages offers the option. - 3
Find the setting manually
If there is no prompt, open the profile or menu, choose Messages settings and enable RCS chats or chat features. - 4
Wait for Connected
Start the full test after the RCS status shows Connected.
Verify the result with one cross-platform test
- 1
Send plain text
Confirm that the conversation identifies the message as RCS. - 2
Send a normal image
Check that the recipient receives the clear image rather than an MMS-quality fallback. - 3
Ask for a reply
Confirm that the conversation shows the correct giffgaff number. - 4
Test optional features
With the other person's agreement, test read receipts or a group conversation.
If text and media travel both ways and the number is correct, setup is complete. There is no reason to delete an eSIM, reactivate the number or reset the entire phone.
RCS needs Wi-Fi or mobile data. Restore the available data connection before checking RCS again. Ordinary SMS follows separate charging rules explained in the giffgaff SMS cost guide.
If the status is still setting up
During the first few hours, keep the giffgaff line enabled and one data connection available. Reopen the RCS settings later and repeat a plain-text test.
Check that Google Messages is the default app, that a dual-SIM phone is using the giffgaff line and that the number shown by the account and phone matches the number being tested.
If ordinary calls and SMS also fail, restore the line or account service first. That broader fault cannot be solved inside the RCS switch.
Fix RCS after porting when it keeps the temporary number
A number brought from another UK network can leave RCS attached to the temporary giffgaff number. Wait until after 9pm on the scheduled transfer day and confirm that the imported number appears in the giffgaff Dashboard.
If the transfer is complete but Android RCS still shows the temporary number, giffgaff's stated fix is to uninstall and reinstall Google Messages. Reopen it, enable RCS chats and check both the number and connection status again.
If the port itself is not complete, use the giffgaff PAC transfer guide first.
The four checks that finish setup
A finished giffgaff RCS setup has four results: Connected status, the correct giffgaff number, working cross-platform text and media, and ordinary SMS that still works separately.
Allow a few hours for a new RCS connection. After a number transfer, wait until after 9pm on the scheduled day before fixing a temporary-number record. Testing RCS and SMS separately shows whether the next useful check belongs in messaging settings or on the mobile line.
