For occasional texts in China, giffgaff is the more predictable starting point

That clarity matters for light users. You do not have to buy a monthly data plan and only need to arrange one qualifying activity within each six-month period. The balance, usage records and deactivation rules are all available in the account. For someone keeping a UK number on long-term standby in China, this predictable process is more useful than a simple comparison of bundle sizes.

VOXI includes China among the 73 destinations covered by its Global Roaming Extras. The current eight-day extra costs £16 and includes 100 minutes, 100 texts and 2GB of data. The 15-day extra costs £26.60 and includes 200 minutes, 200 texts and 4GB of data. A VOXI account must have an active main plan before one of these roaming extras can be purchased.

VOXI's information for China does not separately state that incoming texts are free in the way giffgaff's does. China roaming is technically available, but the current official material is not enough to support a promise of permanently free verification texts. A new VOXI SIM also cannot be activated for the first time in China; VOXI explicitly requires initial activation in the UK.

Wi-Fi Calling does not solve the problem when roaming. Neither operator officially supports it outside the UK. If the SIM has no signal, you must check the account status, balance, roaming settings, partner networks and handset frequency bands.

VOXI's real advantage is its UK data plans

VOXI currently focuses on 30-day rolling plans starting at £10, which can be stopped at any time. In the pricing snapshot taken on 1 September 2026, the £10 plan was promoted with 60GB until 30 September. Allowances on other tiers, and the allowance after the promotion ends, should be checked on the current plan page.

All plans include unlimited use of selected social media apps in the UK. Plans from £12 add selected music services, while plans from £15 add video services. These benefits apply only in the UK. Third-party advertising, external links, voice calls and video calls can still use the general data allowance. A VPN or Apple Private Relay may also interfere with traffic recognition.

VOXI supports Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling and Visual Voicemail. In 2026, its website also began promoting The Nation's Network following the Vodafone and Three merger. Real-world coverage still needs to be checked for the exact address. A brand slogan cannot replace an indoor signal test.

VOXI's inactivity grace period is substantial. If 180 days pass without buying a plan, topping up or generating chargeable outbound use, VOXI may suspend the service and send a warning text. The user then has another 90 days. If there is still no activity after a total of 270 days, VOXI may disconnect the line and remove the remaining balance.

giffgaff keeps the cost of a spare UK number at the lowest tier

giffgaff can be used without buying a monthly bundle. Users can simply retain account credit. Standard UK calls cost £0.25 per minute, texts cost £0.10 each and data costs £0.10 per MB. Be careful with claims of “no identity check”

It is accurate to say that VOXI's standard SIM-only signup page does not use Germany-style passport video KYC. Calling it an anonymous or no-registration SIM would mislead readers.

VOXI requires users to provide true, accurate and complete registration details. A physical SIM requires a UK delivery address, and the account needs a valid payment card. Some device-financing offers and promotions carry a UK residency requirement, but those conditions should not be applied to every standard SIM-only plan. VOXI's privacy and fraud-prevention terms also allow personal information to be shared with fraud-prevention agencies for verification.

giffgaff also collects a name, email address, country and address. It may request identity documents for refunds, Payback or fraud-prevention checks.
