Buying a UK Phone Number, giffgaff WiFi Calling and the Overseas Limit

People buying a UK phone number often include WiFi Calling in their long-term plan. giffgaff supports the feature for compatible phones used in the UK, but not abroad. A buyer who expects to use the number in China or another country should understand that limit before paying.

Check eligibility before changing settings

The current giffgaff help page gives four practical conditions.

CheckRequired result
LocationThe phone is in the UK
HandsetThe exact model appears on the current giffgaff compatibility list
SoftwareThe operating system and carrier firmware meet the requirement
AccountThe number has an active plan or available airtime credit

For iPhone, giffgaff currently requires iOS 17.4 or later and lists the iPhone XR, XS family, second-generation iPhone SE and later common models. Android support varies by manufacturer and exact model.

A WiFi Calling switch that works with O2 or another network does not prove that the same handset is supported by giffgaff. Carrier approval and firmware matter. Check the full model against the live help page.

Enable WiFi Calling

  1. 1

    Enable it on iPhone

Open Settings, Apps, Phone and Wi-Fi Calling, then enable Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone.
  2. 2

    Enable it on Android

Open Settings, Connections and WiFi Calling. Menu names can differ by manufacturer.
  3. 3

    Check VoLTE

On iPhone, select 4G or 5G under Mobile Data, Mobile Data Options and Voice & Data. Android usually shows VoLTE under Connections and Mobile Networks.

A missing Android setting should lead to an operating-system update, restart and exact-model check before any conclusion about support.

VoLTE uses the mobile 4G network. WiFi Calling uses Wi-Fi. Their availability and charging rules remain separate.

Confirm that the feature is working

Connect to reliable Wi-Fi where cellular coverage is weak. Some phones display Wi-Fi Calling or giffgaff WiFiCall. Place an ordinary mobile call, then receive a call from another handset.

WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet calling apps are not valid tests. They can work whenever internet access is available and do not prove that carrier WiFi Calling is active.

  1. 1

    Check the phone

Verify the exact model and current software version.
  2. 2

    Check Wi-Fi

Reconnect Wi-Fi, open a normal web page and test another reliable network.
  3. 3

    Check the account

Restart the phone and confirm that the number has an active plan or credit.
  4. 4

    Escalate with evidence

Give giffgaff the handset, software version, account state and tests already completed if the indicator remains absent.

Outside the UK, use roaming rules

giffgaff states that WiFi Calling is not supported abroad. Calls and SMS in China, the United States or another country depend on roaming availability, the partner network, account balance and handset settings.

VoLTE may work abroad, but it remains a mobile-network call. Charging follows the applicable plan, airtime credit or PAYG rules. A 4G call indicator does not make the call free and does not mean that WiFi Calling is active.

A user who uses a UK number for verification codes abroad should test ordinary roaming SMS and the acceptance policy of each service. WiFi Calling cannot replace either check.

warning
A working Wi-Fi connection outside the UK does not make giffgaff WiFi Calling available abroad.

Decide before buying

Physical SIM and eSIM do not change the location rule. giffgaff says any 4G-capable giffgaff SIM can use the feature. The handset, software, account state and location are the decisive checks.

For UK use with weak indoor coverage and a supported phone, WiFi Calling can materially improve giffgaff service. A physical giffgaff SIM can be prepared in advance after those checks.

For long-term use abroad, review the giffgaff China roaming guide and giffgaff SMS verification guide. Do not include WiFi Calling in the overseas plan.

The practical takeaway

In the UK, update a supported phone, enable WiFi Calling and confirm the result with ordinary incoming and outgoing calls. If the setting is present but the service is absent, check the exact model, software, Wi-Fi and account state.

Outside the UK, treat the number as a roaming line. If the intended purchase depends on overseas WiFi Calling, stop and choose a number service designed for that use.
