How to Check Your giffgaff Balance, Plan Data and Recent Charges
A giffgaff balance check should start in the online Dashboard or the giffgaff app. Both separate airtime credit from the active plan, its remaining data and its expiry date. A zero credit balance does not mean that an active plan has stopped working.

Choose the balance you actually need
| What you need | Best place to check | Result to record |
|---|---|---|
| Money held on the account | Dashboard or app | Airtime credit in pounds |
| Remaining plan data | My giffgaff or 43430 option 2 | Data allowance and expiry date |
| Recent paid usage | Usage statement | Charge, date and amount |
| A top-up that seems missing | Order history and Dashboard | Whether the order was a top-up or a Plan |
This distinction resolves most balance confusion. An order marked `1 x Plan` bought an allowance and appears in the plan area. Only an order marked `1 x top-up` increases airtime credit.
Check airtime credit now
Sign in to the giffgaff Dashboard and confirm that the mobile number at the top belongs to the SIM you are checking. Members with more than one account can easily view the wrong number.
The app shows credit and plan information under My giffgaff. Official guidance says the current plan and credit figures normally update within seconds of usage, so this is the right view for an immediate decision.
Without data access, dial 43430 from the giffgaff SIM and choose option 2. You can also text `INFO` to 85075 to receive current plan information and the credit balance.
Texting `BALANCE` to 43430 is less conclusive. giffgaff says the reply may direct you to the app or Dashboard rather than include the exact credit amount. Treat old instructions that promise a balance figure by return text as a fallback, not the primary method.
Check remaining plan data and expiry
Use My giffgaff in the app or dial 43430 and choose option 2. Record both the remaining data and the expiry date. Plan allowances and airtime credit are separate, so a £0 credit balance can sit alongside a fully usable plan.
When less than 500MB remains, giffgaff may allow the next plan to start early. Starting it early ends the current plan and removes any unused allowance. If the task is only to check the giffgaff data balance, do not confirm an early start by accident.
The current plan is the allowance available now. A queued plan waits until the current one expires. A recurring plan is scheduled to renew. Neither queued nor recurring labels describe today's airtime credit.
Find out why credit went down
Open the usage statement. It separates recent plan information, airtime credit and chargeable activity. International calls, MMS, premium numbers, out-of-plan roaming and PAYG data after a plan runs out can all use credit.
The statement is not always immediate. giffgaff says a new member using credit may wait five days before the page becomes available, while a new member using a plan may wait 32 days. The headline balance can update first, so a lower credit figure with no detailed line yet is possible.
When checking from outside the UK, use Wi-Fi to open the app or website first. It avoids relying on whether a shortcode call or text completes on the visited network and makes it easier to keep screenshots of the account, plan and order. Do not repeatedly top up or switch on roaming data while the reason for a missing balance is still unknown.
If a top-up is not showing
Open Order history before paying again.
- check_circleAn order marked `1 x Plan` belongs in the plan area, not the airtime credit balance.
- check_circleAn order marked `1 x top-up` should add credit after a short processing period. Turn mobile data off while checking so PAYG background traffic does not spend the new balance.
- check_circleIf no order appears but the bank shows a completed charge, save the time, amount and payment record before contacting a giffgaff agent.
- check_circleIf the website is correct but the app is stale, sign out, sign in again and confirm the mobile number.
Stop troubleshooting when the bank payment, order type and matching Dashboard figure agree. If they do not agree, give those three pieces of evidence to support instead of making another payment.
Decide what to do with the result
For a UK number kept mainly while abroad, check that enough credit remains for the next qualifying use and confirm the number is still active. A balance by itself does not keep a number active. See the giffgaff number retention guide for the separate activity rule.
If the plan is nearly empty, choose whether the next plan should start immediately or wait in the queue. If an out-of-plan service reduced airtime credit, identify it in the usage statement before adding money. The giffgaff top-up guide covers the next payment step.
The check is complete when you can state the current airtime credit, the remaining plan data and expiry date, and the reason for the latest charge. Each answer should be visible in the account, a 43430 result or an official SMS.
