Choose the plan as well as the network

For giffgaff vs EE, start by testing EE if your priority is everyday UK mobile data. For months with little use, compare giffgaff credit on a pay-as-you-go basis. Both providers offer more than one payment model.

This comparison uses official product information checked on 14 September 2026 and an Opensignal report. It is not a hands-on, side-by-side SIM speed test.

We also reviewed network comparisons, customer-satisfaction surveys and current plan round-ups to identify gaps around support, reseller offers, device features and exit cost. Advertising rankings, promotional prices and individual speed tests were excluded. Product facts come from operator pages and terms, while network context uses reports with a stated observation period.

Network results need local context

giffgaff runs on O2. Opensignal’s January 2026 UK report found EE leading across several experience measures, while O2 won overall Coverage Experience. The study covered the four main operators from 1 October to 29 December 2025. O2’s results are not a direct measurement of a giffgaff SIM.

Use that evidence to shortlist a network, then check home and commuting coverage. Try everyday browsing and video calls with a short-term option before committing to a long contract.

EE speed tiers matter

EE SIM tierSpeed condition
No FrillsUp to 10Mbps
EssentialsUp to 100Mbps
All RounderUncapped plan speeds

These examples come from EE’s current short terms. Uncapped means no plan speed ceiling, not a guaranteed throughput. Your device, signal and congestion still affect performance.

Compare the cost over your intended stay

giffgaff offers monthly plans, 18-month contracts and credit for usage without a plan. EE lists 24-month and rolling 30-day SIM-only options alongside separate PAYG products. EE Pay Monthly involves a credit check; its PAYG product does not.

Add the scheduled monthly charges and travel costs for the time you expect to use the service. Value bundled extras only if they replace something you would otherwise buy. Check early exit charges before taking a contract for a short stay.

Match roaming to your itinerary

giffgaff plans include up to 5GB in its EU Zone, for eligible members normally living and mainly using the service in the UK. EE PAYG lists European roaming access at £2.50 for 24 hours or £10 for seven days. Some EE monthly tiers include European roaming, so the PAYG charge is not universal.

For a short trip within 5GB, giffgaff’s included allowance can be convenient. For heavier travel use, compare an EE tier’s included data against its total price. UK allowances alone do not establish the cost of roaming in China.

A spare number still needs activity

giffgaff credit has no fixed monthly fee, but the number needs qualifying activity at least every six months. Receiving texts alone does not satisfy that rule. EE also offers credit-based Talk and Text; its help page says an inactive PAYG account can hibernate after 180 days.

For a lightly used number in China, compare giffgaff’s maintenance steps and destination charges first, then check EE’s equivalent conditions. Neither service guarantees third-party verification messages.

Test before transferring

For daily UK use, test EE at the places that matter to you. Keep giffgaff if it already meets your needs at an acceptable cost. Once the new SIM works for calls, messages and data and you accept the contract cost, use the PAC process to move your number. If testing fails, retain the existing service and do not start the transfer.
