German prepaid SIMs must be identity-verified before activation. Vodafone offers selfie video or automated recognition, a live video call, electronic ID and postal PostIdent, among other methods. Depending on the route, users can verify with a valid national ID card, passport or electronic residence permit.

CallYa offers more than a zero base fee

CallYa Classic is a full German prepaid mobile service. It supports 5G, Wi-Fi Calling and EU roaming, and users can switch to a CallYa plan with data and call allowances within the same account. That makes it flexible for someone who mainly receives texts but occasionally wants a bundle while visiting Germany or the EU.

How a zero-fee plan creates a maintenance cost

Vodafone does not explicitly list free incoming texts as activity that keeps CallYa active. Its help page only states that it may terminate the line after more than 90 days without use. A safer approach is to generate a chargeable activity before the 90-day deadline and watch for any disconnection text.

If you use outgoing texts from China for this purpose, the current rate is €0.19 per message. Four messages give a static estimate of €0.76, but every action must take place before its respective 90-day deadline. Some calendar years may therefore require a fifth message. €0.76 should not be treated as a fixed annual fee. Customer support comes with different trade-offs. Both SIMs carry long-term overseas-use risks
