giffgaff Self-Setup, Full-Service or pre-activated SIM? Price, first top-up and account ownership compared (2026)
In China, giffgaff physical SIMs usually come three ways: a self-setup SIM (you activate and pay the first top-up), a SIM with a voucher (you activate and use the voucher for the first top-up) and a pre-activated SIM (the seller activates it and adds credit).

They differ in more than price. Two things affect you every day afterwards: how the £10 first top-up is paid, and who registers the giffgaff account.
If you have no overseas bank card and want the account in your own name from day one, the case for the giffgaff Full-Service SIM is: $43 (about ¥299) including an official £10 voucher, no overseas card needed for the first top-up, the account registered by you, and Chinese-language guidance step by step.
The short version: three ways to buy, side by side
| Option | Price | What you get | How the £10 first top-up is paid | Who registers the giffgaff account |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| giffgaff Self-Setup SIM | $15 (about ¥99) | Physical SIM plus a Chinese and English activation guide | You pay: an overseas bank card or your own £10 voucher | You |
| Self-Setup SIM + £10 official giffgaff top-up voucher | $38 (about ¥258) | Physical SIM, guide and an official £10 voucher | With the voucher | You |
| giffgaff Full-Service SIM | $43 (about ¥299) | Physical SIM, official £10 voucher and Chinese-language activation and usage guidance | With the included voucher | You, with Chinese-language guidance from support |
Where they differ: the £10 first top-up and who owns the account
Activation takes two things: registering a giffgaff account on the giffgaff activation page, and a first top-up of at least £10. The three ways of buying differ in who does those two things.
- check_circlePaying the first top-up: with a self-setup SIM you pay it yourself with an overseas bank card or an official £10 voucher; Visa cards issued by Chinese banks often fail. A SIM with a voucher uses the voucher; a pre-activated SIM is topped up by the seller.
- check_circleWho registers the account: the number, credit, plan, SIM replacement and keeping the number active are all managed in the giffgaff account. The email and password used to register it decide who can log in and manage the number later.
- check_circleKeeping the number: giffgaff requires at least one qualifying use every 6 months, such as a call, a text, data use or a top-up; only receiving texts does not count. You log in to the account to check and top up; see Keeping your giffgaff number.
Is activating it yourself hard? The hard part is the top-up, not the steps
Self-activation is 4 steps: insert the SIM, open giffgaff.com/activate and enter the 6-digit code on the SIM pack, register your own giffgaff account, then make a first top-up of £10. It usually takes a few minutes and at most 24 hours.
Most people get stuck at step 4 because Visa cards issued by Chinese banks often fail. Without an overseas bank card, an official £10 voucher does the job; see Topping up giffgaff from China. If a China Merchants Bank card is declined, see giffgaff activation payment fails with a CMB card.
giffgaff's help centre says physical SIMs can only be delivered to a UK address, so people in China usually buy through a channel in China.
