Which phones work with the ENC US SIM? China-model iPhones, single vs dual SIM, and how to check for carrier locks (2026)

The US T-Mobile physical SIM (ENC) works on iPhone 6S or later, whether bought in mainland China or overseas. It does not work on locked, jailbroken or sticker-unlocked phones or on Huawei phones, and for other Android phones you should email before ordering. Before you buy, spend 2 minutes checking three things: is the model new enough, is it unlocked, and does it take one SIM or two. The SIM cannot be returned once shipped, so confirming the phone first is the safe move. If your phone qualifies, the case is simple: $28 (about ¥199) including the first month's 30 minutes and 100 texts, a real T-Mobile +1 number, working after 3 steps and about 5 minutes.

Check 1: is the phone unlocked?

  1. 1

    Open About

Go to Settings → General → About and scroll to Carrier Lock.
  2. 2

    Read what it says

"No SIM restrictions" means the phone is unlocked and will work. A carrier's name means the phone is locked to that carrier and cannot use this SIM (Apple Support).
  3. 3

    Look for a SIM sticker

Pull out the SIM tray. If a thin film sits between the SIM and the tray, it is a sticker-unlocked phone, which is really a locked phone, and this SIM does not support it.

ENC's own requirement is the same: the phone must be unlocked and pass its compatibility check. If unsure, dial *#06# to get the IMEI and enter it in ENC's device compatibility check.

Check 2: one SIM slot or two decides whether your Chinese SIM comes out

Apple says these iPhones bought in mainland China take two physical SIM cards: iPhone XR, XS Max, the 11 series, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, the 14, 15 and 16 series, 16e, 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max (Apple: Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards).

  • check_circleDual-SIM iPhones: keep your Chinese SIM and the ENC SIM in at the same time. The Chinese number carries on with calls and data while ENC receives US texts over Wi-Fi Calling. This is the easiest setup.
  • check_circleSingle-SIM iPhones: mainland China models from iPhone 6S to iPhone X, plus XS, 12 mini, 13 mini, the SE range and 17e, have one physical SIM slot. Take the Chinese SIM out to use ENC, and your Chinese number cannot receive texts meanwhile; you can swap back after receiving a code, and renewals and number keeping are unaffected.
  • check_circleiPhone Air: the mainland China model is eSIM-only with no SIM tray, so it cannot take this physical SIM.

On a dual-SIM iPhone, the Wi-Fi Calling switch is under Settings → Cellular: tap the ENC line first, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling.

Check 3: iOS version and network

  • check_circleiOS version: ENC recommends updating the phone to the latest system version before activation.
  • check_circleNetwork: the first time you turn on Wi-Fi Calling you need an overseas network connection, as the product page states; after that, any Wi-Fi lets you send and receive texts and make US calls.
  • check_circleNo signal after inserting the SIM is normal: in China this SIM does not use the cellular network and has no data, so it is not faulty.

Full steps are in the ENC Mobile activation guide; if it will not switch on, start with ENC SIM shows no signal.

Why Android phones need a check first

In China this SIM receives texts over Wi-Fi Calling. Whether an Android phone can turn on Wi-Fi Calling for a T-Mobile number depends on the exact model and software, and brands vary a lot, which is why the product page asks you to email before ordering. Huawei phones are confirmed not to work.

When you email, include the brand, exact model and system version, and order once support confirms. If you have a spare iPhone 6S or newer, an iPhone is the safest choice.
