Voicemail involves two different actions. A missed call may be diverted to the mailbox when the phone is off, out of coverage or unanswered, but that does not mean your balance has already been charged. The cost depends on when you retrieve the message and which country or region you are connected in.

What voicemail costs in the UK

The standard giffgaff mailbox number is 443. Call it from the relevant giffgaff SIM to open that line's voicemail.

With an active plan, voicemail is included and each call to the mailbox uses one minute of the call allowance. Current plans include unlimited UK calls, so there is normally no extra payment for listening in the UK.

Use 443 if the phone shows 901

Some handsets detect the underlying O2 network and insert O2's 901 voicemail number. The giffgaff mailbox number is 443.

If holding 1 fails, the call ends immediately or the handset reports a wrong voicemail number, dial 443 manually. Once that works, change the voicemail number in the phone app to 443. On a dual-SIM handset, also make sure the call is placed from the giffgaff line.

Check the charge before listening abroad

In the EU and selected destinations, an account that remains eligible for Roam Like at Home uses one plan minute for voicemail. Without a plan, the call costs 8p from airtime credit.

Outside that area, voicemail retrieval follows the local roaming call rate and may be charged per minute. Switzerland, the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey also have separate rates, so location matters more than simply being in Europe.

Set the voicemail PIN while still in the UK and connected normally. If 443 or +443 cannot be reached abroad, call your own giffgaff number from another phone, press the star key when voicemail answers, then enter the PIN.

Dial 1626 from the giffgaff SIM to switch network voicemail off, or 1616 to switch it back on. After the recorded confirmation, call the number from another phone and leave it unanswered to verify the final state.
