giffgaff UK ID Verification: SIM Activation and Exceptions (2026)

giffgaff UK ID verification is not a single universal step. Ordinary SIM activation does not currently follow a photo-ID registration process. A new member verifies an email address, enters the code from a physical SIM or requests an eSIM in the app, creates an account and pays for a plan or credit. Identity documents can still appear in separate tasks, including adult-content age checks, formal personal-data requests and complex account-recovery cases.

Activation, age verification and account-ownership checks have different entry points. A member who uploaded a passport for the adult-content check did not necessarily encounter the same process when activating the SIM.

What ordinary activation actually verifies

A giffgaff physical SIM has an activation code on the card carrier. Enter it on the official activation page, then sign in or create an account. A new account starts with email verification, followed by the plan or credit choice and payment.

A new eSIM is requested and installed through the giffgaff app on a compatible phone. The published route checks access to the email and account, device eligibility and payment. It does not ask the new member to upload a passport or identity card as a standard activation step.

  1. 1

    Prepare the email and phone

Use an email address you can open and confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports the intended SIM type.
  2. 2

    Create or open the account

Use the official giffgaff website or app rather than a link received from an unknown sender.
  3. 3

    Submit the activation details

Enter the physical-SIM activation code or request the eSIM in the app.
  4. 4

    Choose and pay

Select a plan or credit and complete payment through the supported checkout.
  5. 5

    Check the result

Wait for giffgaff service, then test a call, text and mobile data.

Use the giffgaff activation guide for the full sequence. When the phone has service, the intended number and plan or credit are visible, and the three tests work, ordinary activation is complete.

When documents can be required

Removing giffgaff's adult-content block is an age-verification task. The current official page accepts a valid passport or British driving licence and says the change may take up to 24 hours. A working SIM can therefore remain subject to the block until the separate age check is completed.

A formal request for a copy of personal data can also require identity evidence and the SIM serial number so that the data is released to the correct person. This is a data-protection process, not part of activating a new line.

Routine account login can use an email or SMS code. If the registered email is unavailable, the number cannot receive a code or the account details do not match, a support agent may ask for the number, SIM serial, payment history or other ownership evidence. Keep passports, verification codes and payment details inside giffgaff's secure pages. Do not post them in public forum replies.

Use the giffgaff account recovery guide when the problem is account access rather than new-SIM activation.

A current Parliament petition is not today's activation rule

A UK Parliament petition published in April 2026 asks the Government to require identity checks for all SIM sales. It closes on 10 October 2026.

The petition records a proposal. It is not current legislation and does not show that giffgaff has added a photo-ID requirement to ordinary activation. Use the live giffgaff activation page and Help Centre for the requirements that apply today.

A future change should appear in legislation, operator guidance and the actual activation journey. A discussion post or second-hand summary on its own is not a reason to upload extra identity documents.

Use the task as the decision point

For a new giffgaff SIM, prepare an accessible email, a compatible phone, the activation code or app, and a supported payment method. Stop when service appears, the intended plan or credit is shown, and calling, texting and data work.

If a page requests a document, identify the task before continuing. Adult-content access needs proof of age, a data request needs identity confirmation, and a difficult account recovery may need evidence that the number belongs to you. That distinction explains why one member can activate without photo ID while another later sees a passport check.

giffgaff ID verification questions

Do I need a passport to activate a giffgaff SIM?expand_more
The current published ordinary activation route does not list a passport or photo-ID upload. It uses the activation code or app, email, account details and payment.
Why is giffgaff asking me for ID if activation does not?expand_more
Check the task. Adult-content age verification, a personal-data request or a complex account recovery can request evidence that is not part of ordinary SIM activation.
Can a non-UK passport be used for age verification?expand_more
The current official page accepts a valid passport or British driving licence. Follow the document options shown on the live verification page when submitting.
Will the UK require ID for every SIM in the future?expand_more
A current Parliament petition proposes that requirement, but a petition is not existing law. Watch for a Government response, legislation and formal operator updates.
