O2 officially requires prepaid customers to add credit at least once every six months and accepts ordinary bank transfers. Members of the O2 community were still reporting in 2026 that a €0.01 transfer extended the validity period by another six months. Two such transfers total €0.02 a year, equivalent to about CNY 0.156 using the European Central Bank reference rate for 31 August 2026.

O2 community posts from 2026 include individual cases in which service in China stopped unexpectedly and the customer was asked to verify their identity again. These reports signal a possible risk, but they do not describe every customer’s experience. Do not make this SIM the only recovery route for an important account.

Where O2 Germany Has a Real Advantage

O2 Germany’s no-monthly-fee option is called the Prepaid Basic Tariff. Calls and texts within Germany cost €0.09 per minute or message. Mobile data triggers a 150MB day pass for €1.49 when used, and separate data packs are also available. Customers who spend more time in Germany can move to the S, M, or L plans, or choose an annual plan.

Both physical SIM and eSIM are available. O2’s updated 2026 ordering process lets a new customer select Prepaid eSIM at checkout and receive a QR code after completing identity verification. Guides that assume every customer must first order a physical SIM and later convert it to eSIM are now out of date.

Usage in the EU and European Economic Area generally follows domestic rates or plan allowances, subject to the fair-use policy. The UK is currently treated as Zone 1 until 31 December 2026. Check O2’s latest notice to see whether that arrangement is extended.

What the CNY 0.15 per Year Method Actually Requires

O2’s official top-up page says customers should add credit at least every six months or they may lose rights to the number. Bank transfer is one of the supported top-up methods. To obtain the current receiving account and your personal payment reference, send BANK to 56656 from the O2 SIM.

The €0.01 method depends on three conditions. Your bank must allow such a small euro transfer, O2’s current payment system must accept it and match the payment reference correctly, and the credited amount must extend the validity period. O2’s formal help page refers to a required or freely chosen amount, but it does not promise €0.01 as the guaranteed minimum top-up.

O2 changed its top-up IBAN in 2026. A standing transfer sent to the old account may be returned. Community members have also reported delays of several days and temporary failures. Obtain the latest bank details from the SIM before every transfer, send the payment several weeks early, and confirm both the credit and the new validity date in Mein O2. A completed bank debit is not proof that O2 credited the account.

This calculation excludes international transfer charges, foreign-exchange spreads, the initial €4.99 SIM, and the time needed to resolve a failed transfer. The headline figure is realistic only with an account that supports free euro transfers.

What Works While Roaming in China

China appears on O2’s list of countries covered by its international data options. A September 2026 promotion also offers 2GB for seven days for €9.99 under Roaming Plus World, with the offer due to end on 30 September. Recheck both the allowance and price after that date.

Standard roaming uses regional pricing. China is in Country Group 5, where receiving text messages is free. Current pay-as-you-go rates include €0.59 to send a text, €1.59 per minute to receive a call, €2.99 per minute to make a call, and up to €12.29 per MB for data in China. If you only need verification messages, switch off data roaming and avoid returning unfamiliar calls.

Free incoming texts only means O2 does not charge to receive them. A bank, online platform, or messaging provider may still refuse to send a verification code because of number ranges, international routing, or fraud controls.

giffgaff Avoids German Identity Checks and Bank-Transfer Monitoring

giffgaff does not require a German bank transfer setup or German-style video identity verification. You can buy PAYG credit, then complete an eligible activity within six months by sending a text, making a call, using a small amount of mobile data, or buying more credit or another plan. O2 Germany’s help page says that missing the top-up deadline can mean losing rights to the number, and it does not promise an equivalent recovery period for porting out.

O2 Germany has the lower nominal maintenance cost and is stronger for local use in Germany and the EU. giffgaff has the simpler account routine for anyone who needs a UK number and wants to manage it remotely. Choose the country of the number first. A few cents of annual maintenance cost should come later.

Which One Should You Choose

Consider O2 Germany when all three conditions apply. You need a German number, can complete identity verification yourself, and have access to low-cost euro bank transfers. The €0.01 transfer should be described as a currently reported community method, not a permanent promise.

For most other use cases that call for a UK number, choose giffgaff first. It removes the German identity check, payment-reference matching, and manual transfer confirmation, while providing a UK number and a PAC porting route. For important accounts, add an authenticator app, passkey, or recovery codes instead of relying on any one SIM.
