Choose the number country first

PayGo here means Ultra Mobile PayGo, a US mobile service. Shortlist it when you need a US number. For a lightly used UK number with no recurring plan, consider giffgaff credit. The two countries are not interchangeable.

Chinese-language guides commonly focus on monthly cost and verification texts, while sometimes turning one successful activation into a general promise. Clear three purchase and activation checks

The official Ultra Mobile PayGo page sends SIM kit buyers to eBay. Its activation page asks for the 11-character ACT CODE on the physical SIM, and the terms require an unlocked compatible device. Confirm that a seller supplies an unactivated kit, check device compatibility, and keep the SIM purchase price separate from the first 30-day service period.

Third-party activation guides often prescribe a ZIP code, network setup or E911 address. Those steps vary by page, account and device. Do not copy somebody else's identity or emergency address. Ask the operator to confirm eligibility and required details before attempting activation outside the US.

Compare recurring costs

Twelve PayGo renewals cost $36 before extras and cover 360 days, not a full calendar year. SIM purchase, taxes and roaming are additional. giffgaff’s occasional-use cost depends on qualifying activity and destination rates; initial activation costs are separate.

A PayGo wallet below $3 cannot renew and service is suspended. The terms describe a window of up to 90 days depending on the remaining wallet balance: a zero balance may be cancelled after 60 days, while a positive balance below $3 may receive a further 30 days. Treat this as a recovery window, not a renewal plan. A giffgaff number still needs qualifying activity even when it has credit; incoming messages alone do not satisfy the rule.

Recalculate usage with the China roaming tables

PayGo’s included 100MB is not a China data allowance. Where a UK number meets your needs, giffgaff has the lower listed incoming-text cost. A required US number may justify PayGo’s recurring and roaming charges. Disable data roaming before inserting giffgaff to avoid background use at 20p/MB. Keep enough PayGo Wallet credit for roaming texts and calls.

Verify Wi-Fi Calling before budgeting around it

Ultra Mobile’s general terms make Wi-Fi Calling dependent on supported equipment, account provisioning and an internet connection. That does not establish availability for every PayGo account in China. This comparison therefore uses verified cellular roaming charges.

If you plan to rely on Wi-Fi Calling, ask the operator about your exact plan, account and device. After setup, test the network indicator, messaging and wallet charges. Until confirmed, budget for cellular roaming. Another user's overseas activation or long-term service result does not establish yours.

Choose and migrate in four steps

Try giffgaff when a UK number is suitable and set a qualifying-activity reminder. Consider PayGo when a US number is necessary and the renewal cost is acceptable; reserve wallet credit for roaming as well.

Before ordering, confirm the number country, unactivated-kit source and device compatibility. After activation, disable unneeded roaming data and set either PayGo Auto Recharge or a six-month giffgaff activity reminder. Test ordinary texts, calls, the target service and actual charges. Change existing account bindings only after every check passes; otherwise keep the original number and recovery methods. A UK PAC cannot convert a UK number into a US number or vice versa.
