iMessage UK number activation failed: when to wait and when to act
If you have put a UK SIM in your iPhone and want to use its number for iMessage, you may find the number still spinning under Send & Receive, or your messages still arriving from your email address. Start by identifying which symptom you have. Receiving ordinary SMS does not necessarily mean the iMessage number setup is complete.

This guide helps you decide whether to check the phone's settings or ask the carrier to resolve SMS service first, when to wait after those checks, and when to contact support. The final check is that your contact sees your UK number as the sender and messages work in both directions.
According to Apple's phone-number setup and activation guidance, iMessage requires an active SIM or eSIM to use a phone number, and activation may send a chargeable SMS. After confirming ordinary SMS reception, check whether Apple has verified the number and whether messages are being sent from that number or an email address.
Identify the actual symptom
Open Settings, Apps, Messages, then Send & Receive. Check whether the UK number has a tick, is still spinning, or is absent while an email address is available.
A selected number with messages still arriving from your email calls for a sender-identity check. A spinning number calls for activation troubleshooting. Bubble colour alone is not a reliable test because the recipient and messaging protocol also affect it.
Ask a trusted contact to send a regular SMS to the number. If that fails too, resolve the SIM, account or network problem first. Signing into an Apple Account again cannot restore a carrier's unavailable SMS service.
Restore the activation conditions
Use a reliable internet connection, update iOS and verify the date and time zone. On a dual-SIM phone, check the UK line is enabled rather than looking only at the travel data connection.
Make sure the number can send SMS and ask the carrier about international SMS support. Read any prompt about activation-message charges before proceeding. A prepaid balance alone does not establish that all required messaging services are available.
With those conditions satisfied, follow Apple's recovery sequence once: turn off iMessage and FaceTime, restart the phone, and turn them back on. Allow up to 24 hours for number verification. A spinning indicator means the phone is still trying; repeated toggling is unnecessary.
Apple also documents a specific iOS 26 case: adding an eSIM after the initial iPhone setup may not activate iMessage automatically. Toggle iMessage off and on in that situation, then check its status. This is not a reason to keep cycling the setting for every failure.
Escalate after the waiting period
If the number remains unselected after the checks and 24-hour wait, have the carrier verify international SMS and account service. If those are working, contact Apple Support with the error, iOS version and steps already completed.
An email address can provide temporary iMessage access. Tell contacts you are using that identity; it does not mean the UK number is activated.
Once the number is ticked, select it and start a new conversation with a trusted contact. Ask them to confirm which identity appears and verify messages work in both directions. Ordinary SMS and third-party verification codes remain separate services to test.
