Ultra Mobile PayGo out of stock? Choosing between PayGo, Tello, Red Pocket and giffgaff (2026)
Ultra Mobile PayGo, the $3-a-month US line nicknamed the "purple SIM" by Chinese-speaking users, has become hard to buy. Reseller stock runs out, prices rise and some new customers struggle to activate. Tello, Red Pocket and giffgaff often come up as alternatives, but they are not interchangeable. First decide whether you need a US number or simply a foreign number you can keep long term, then compare prices.

Prices and stock change often. Figures below reflect official information we could check on 14 October 2026; confirm on each provider's site before buying. We treat reseller shortages as a buying difficulty, not as an official discontinuation.
Can't buy it, or can't activate it?
"Out of stock" can mean three different things: a reseller has run out, the official channel has limited or changed sales, or you have the SIM but cannot activate it. Each needs a different response.
- check_circleReseller out of stock: wait for a restock or pick an alternative below. Do not overpay for a SIM of unclear origin.
- check_circleSIM in hand but activation fails: contact the seller and carrier about the activation code, device compatibility and address requirements before buying again.
- check_circleAlready using PayGo: focus on keeping the number, covered below.
Pick a direction in 30 seconds
Choose the number country first and the price second. Many services require a number from a specific country, so a cheaper number from another country does not help.
- check_circleYou need a US number and want flexible monthly plans: start with Tello.
- check_circleYou need a US number, are happy to prepay a year and can activate within 90 days of ordering: consider Red Pocket annual plans.
- check_circleYou only need a foreign number to keep long term and receive occasional texts, and it does not have to be American: giffgaff gives you a UK number with no fixed monthly fee and clear keep-alive rules.
- check_circleYou already have PayGo: keep your current number rather than abandoning one that is already linked to your accounts.
Side-by-side comparison
| Item | Ultra Mobile PayGo | Tello | Red Pocket | giffgaff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number country | US | US | US | UK |
| How you pay | $3 every 30 days from the PayGo Wallet | Custom monthly plan from $5/month | 360-day annual plan, from the equivalent of $5/month | No fixed monthly fee; credit only is possible |
| Activation | Compatible, unlocked phone; follow the official flow | Compatible, unlocked phone; set the E911 address and Wi-Fi Calling before using it overseas | Activate within 90 days of the order; eSIM on all annual-plan networks with a compatible phone | UK number, physical SIM or eSIM |
| Keeping the number | Wallet must hold at least $3 at the end of each 30-day cycle or service is suspended | Monthly plans renew by cycle; stand-alone PAYG credit expires three months after purchase | Kept for the prepaid term; decide on renewal before expiry | At least one qualifying action or top-up every 6 months; receiving texts does not count |
| Receiving texts in China | PayGo roaming rate, $0.10 per received text | Requires PAYG credit; charged at roaming rates | Depends on network and plan; check in your account | Free to receive, 30p to send |
| Main risk | Unreliable supply; new activations may fail | US address setup needed before activation | Full year paid upfront and hard to recover if you stop | Not a US number; turn off mobile data to avoid charges |
Activation and keep-alive rules matter more than a dollar or two per month. Losing a number to an empty balance or expiry can lock you out of the accounts linked to it.
Already on PayGo? Protect the number
Under Ultra Mobile's terms, PayGo runs in 30-day cycles. If the wallet holds less than the $3 monthly charge at the end of a cycle, service is suspended. With replacements hard to buy, keeping the existing line deserves extra care.
- check_circleKeep the wallet comfortably above the monthly charge or set up reliable automatic top-ups.
- check_circleEach text received in China is deducted from the wallet, so watch the balance if you receive many codes.
- check_circlePayGo does not include data roaming, so do not rely on it for internet abroad.
- check_circleAdd a second recovery method to important accounts instead of depending on this number alone.
Tello: a US number with flexible monthly plans
Tello lets you combine minutes and data, starting at $5 per month, and every plan includes unlimited texts. It offers physical SIM and eSIM, and suits people who need a US number but do not want to prepay a full year.
- check_circleConfirm that the phone is compatible and unlocked. If you will use it abroad, set up the E911 address and Wi-Fi Calling through the official flow and test them first.
- check_circleWithout a monthly plan, PAYG credit expires three months after purchase, after which service ends and the number is deleted. It is not a top-up-once-and-forget SIM.
- check_circleInternational roaming requires at least $5 in PAYG credit and is charged at destination rates.

Red Pocket: prepay a year and stop thinking about it
Red Pocket annual plans buy 360 days of service in one payment. Its help centre says annual plans start at the equivalent of $5 per month and are sold on its website and its official eBay store.
- check_circlePrepaid plans must be activated within 90 days of the order date or they expire. Record both dates when you order.
- check_circleYou choose between networks, and roaming coverage, eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling depend on the network. Check them against your phone and where you will use it.
- check_circlePaying for a year upfront is only good value if you will use the full year. Money for unused months is hard to recover.

giffgaff: any foreign number you can keep, not necessarily American
Many people buy PayGo simply to have a cheap foreign number they can keep and use for occasional codes, without needing it to be American. In that case, consider giffgaff. It provides a UK number and cannot replace a US number where one is required.
- check_circleThere is no fixed monthly fee. To keep the number, make a call, send a text, use mobile data, or top up or buy a plan at least once every 6 months. Receiving texts alone does not count.
- check_circleReceiving texts in China is free; sending costs 30p per text.
- check_circleTurn off mobile data and data roaming for this SIM before inserting it, or background data will use your credit.

Test before moving your accounts
- 1
Confirm the line
Check the number, plan, expiry date and balance in the carrier account and keep a screenshot. - 2
Test ordinary texts
Send a text from another phone and confirm it arrives. - 3
Try the target service
Ordinary texts arriving does not mean every service's verification codes will. Test once on the service you plan to link. - 4
Then move important accounts
Move important accounts only after testing, and keep the old number active until the move is complete.
